WhatsApp Groups API: what it does and its 8-person cap
Meta's own developer feature for creating and managing WhatsApp groups from a business account. It requires an Official Business Account and caps every group at 8 participants, per Meta's documentation. A community of dozens or hundreds runs on the consumer WhatsApp group mechanism instead, which this API does not reach.
- WhatsApp Groups API
- Meta's own developer API for creating and managing WhatsApp groups from a business account, gated to an Official Business Account and capped at 8 participants per group, which keeps it from reaching a community-sized WhatsApp group.
What it is
Meta documents an official WhatsApp Groups API, open to businesses with an Official Business Account: create and delete groups, send text, media and template messages into them, manage participants, generate invite links and pin messages, all through the Cloud API. A business can hold up to 10,000 groups per number.
The limit that matters
The participant cap is 8 per group. That number is the whole story: it is an API for small, business-created groups, not a way to programmatically manage a community-sized WhatsApp group that already has dozens or hundreds of members.
WhatsApp Business app phone numbers are not eligible for the API at all. Only an Official Business Account qualifies.
Why this is not community scheduling
A WhatsApp community (a parents’ group, a fan chat, a customer circle) usually holds far more than 8 people, and it usually already exists rather than being created fresh through an API. The Groups API does not reach either case. The full breakdown, with the API’s stated limits read against what a real community-sized group needs, is in Meta’s WhatsApp Groups API caps at 8 people.
If you need to schedule posts to a WhatsApp group of real size, that is the page for the community-sized case.
For where that gap sits relative to the open-source scheduler this site is built on, see postiz alternative.
Questions this raises
What is the WhatsApp Groups API?
Meta's own developer documentation for programmatically creating and managing WhatsApp groups from a business account: creating and deleting groups, sending text, media and template messages into them, managing participants, generating invite links and pinning messages.
How many people can a group hold under the Groups API?
Eight. Meta's documentation states the maximum group participants as 8, alongside a cap of 10,000 groups per business number and one Cloud API business per group.
Can a WhatsApp Business app number use it?
No. Meta's own page states groups are not available for WhatsApp Business app phone numbers or Multi-solution Conversations accounts; an Official Business Account is required.
Is there a group chat API for WhatsApp?
Yes, one: Meta's WhatsApp Groups API, documented on Meta for Developers. It creates and manages groups from an Official Business Account, with a cap of 8 participants per group. It is not a group chat API for an existing community of dozens or hundreds of members.
Does the Groups API replace scheduling into a real community?
No. An 8-person cap is not a community. A WhatsApp group with dozens or hundreds of members runs on the consumer group mechanism, which the Groups API does not reach. That gap is what a tool built for community posting has to answer instead.
