Meta's WhatsApp Groups API caps at 8 people

Meta documents an official WhatsApp Groups API, open to businesses with an Official Business Account: create and manage groups, post text, media and template messages, up to 10,000 groups per business number. The limit that matters is participants: 8 per group, per Meta's own docs, checked 22 September 2026. A WhatsApp community with hundreds of members is not what this API reaches.

Meta documents an official WhatsApp Groups API

On 22 September 2026 we re-checked Meta’s own developer documentation for the WhatsApp Groups API, first noted the week before and held for this piece. It is real: a business with an Official Business Account can create and delete groups, send text, media and template messages into them, manage participants, generate invite links and pin messages, all through the Cloud API. Up to 10,000 groups per business number are allowed.

The one number that decides whether this reaches a real community is further down the same page: maximum group participants, 8.

Eight people is not a community

The WhatsApp groups that community managers, creators and local businesses run typically hold dozens to hundreds of members, the ones people reply in, ask questions in, and stay in. An API capped at 8 participants does not touch that group. It fits a different job: a small working group, a support thread with a handful of people, a deal room. Useful, and not the same product category as “post an update to the community.”

A few other limits worth knowing before anyone assumes this closes a gap:

  • Official Business Account only. Meta’s page states plainly that groups are “not available for WhatsApp Business app phone numbers” or Multi-solution Conversations accounts. The ordinary WhatsApp Business app a lot of small teams already use cannot touch this API at all.
  • One Cloud API business per group, and message editing and deletion are unavailable. Performance metrics are not returned for templates sent into groups, so there is no reporting layer on top of it either.
  • No changelog date. The changelog page at the same domain returned a server error on every attempt this week, so when the current version of this API shipped is not established here, only what it currently says.

What this does not change

Nothing here says anything about how any particular product connects to WhatsApp, ours included; that is a separate, unresolved question and not one this piece answers. What Meta’s own documentation does settle is narrower and more useful: an 8-person API is not evidence that “official WhatsApp community posting” has arrived for groups the size communities run. If your WhatsApp group has more than 8 people in it, this API was not built with it in mind.

We plan WhatsApp group posts in the same calendar as the rest of a week’s content, for groups sized like the ones people run. If you’re weighing that against building on an open-source base yourself, the Postiz comparison covers what the two products share and where they differ. If you only want to schedule a post to a WhatsApp group and not build against the API at all, that page answers it directly. For the API’s full set of limits in one place, see the glossary entry on the WhatsApp Groups API.

Coming from a mainstream scheduler? The Hootsuite alternative and Buffer alternative pages check what each one connects against its own documentation, WhatsApp included, and so do the SocialPilot alternative and Later alternative pages.

Questions this raises

What is the WhatsApp Groups API?

Meta's own developer documentation for programmatically creating and managing WhatsApp groups from a business account: creating and deleting groups, sending text, media and template messages into them, managing participants, generating invite links and pinning messages.

How many people can a group hold under the Groups API?

Eight. Meta's documentation states the maximum group participants as 8, alongside a cap of 10,000 groups per business number and one Cloud API business per group. Neither of the larger numbers changes the participant cap.

Does this mean WhatsApp now offers official group scheduling?

It means Meta documents an API for groups of up to 8 people, gated to businesses with an Official Business Account. A WhatsApp community with dozens or hundreds of members runs on the consumer WhatsApp group mechanism, which this API does not reach.

Can a WhatsApp Business app number use this?

No. Meta's own page states groups are not available for WhatsApp Business app phone numbers or Multi-solution Conversations accounts; an Official Business Account is required.
